The high-pressure (HP) phase of Ba3W2O9 was discovered and its crystal structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The HP phase has corner-sharing WO6 octahedra, which form a bilayer structure. The off-center displacement of the W ions in the WO6 octahedra suggests strong hybridization between the W 5d orbitals and O 2p orbitals.
