Unexpected Competition between Antiferromagnetic and Ferromagnetic States in Hf2MnRu5B2: Predicted and Realized

Competition between antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) orderings is predicted in Hf2MnRu5B2 and observed experimentally because AFM ordering (TN = 20 K) was found at lower magnetic fields (< 0.01 T), while dominant FM behavior with TC ≈ 115 K and a positive Weiss constant of 116.7 K was found at 0.1 T. This behavior is typical of a metamagnetic state, most probably arising from the competing FM and AFM states, as predicted.
