A systematic, efficient route to the first heavier tetrylidyne complexes of niobium [([small kappa]3-tmps)(CO)2Nb[triple bond, length as m-dash]E-R] (E = Si-Sn; R = aryl) starting from the carbonyl niobate (NMe4)[Nb(CO)4([small kappa]2-tmps)] is presented.
