A series of neutral and cationic gold(I) complexes bearing a glucopyranoside-incorporated NHC carbene ligand has been synthetized and structurally characterized. Different secondary ligands (chlorido, phosphanes or sugar-NHC carbene) were employed in order to tune their properties. The compounds were evaluated for their antiproliferative effect on PC-3 prostate cancer cells and on a panel of human tumor cell lines. The activity of phosphane complexes is comparable to that observed for cisplatin. The ensemble of results discloses futher insight into the biological behaviour of NHC carbene gold complexes.
