One day left!

Researcher Live presents its very own mini-series of live events focused on scientific achievements in Agriculture! In this series, we have invited experts to discuss some of the recent advancements in agricultural research. Join us on the 24th March for the first episode in this series, featuring  Dr Laurence Smith (University of Reading) and Dr Lisa Norton (UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology).

This session will provide an overview of results from the Sustainable Economic and Ecological Grazing Systems Project (SEEGSLIP) , that sought to evidence the practices of Pasture for Life Association (PFLA) producers and farmer members using holistic, system-based approaches.  The project findings show that whilst such systems in Great Britain are highly variable according to practitioner, location and practice they are economically viable and deliver wide ranging public goods.

The findings also highlight the importance of considering individual practitioners, groups of practitioners and different practices when evaluating beef production systems and their environmental impacts.

Consumer studies indicated that consumers are aware of the power of food choices for influencing change, with some preferentially choosing PFLA products for ecosystem, animal, and their own health. For other consumers, many competing priorities, and constraints, including awareness about production methods, affected consumption choices. Come along to this talk to find out more!

Speakers Dr Laurence Smith

Laurence Smith is an interdisciplinary food system modeller, working on holistic sustainability assessments, and the co-coordinator for PATHWAYS (a 9M EUR Horizon 2020 project) involving over 30 partners across Europe in the development of policy pathways for sustainable livestock systems. He has over 12 years’ experience in leading projects, work-packages, and tasks within multinational collaborative projects such as FP7 SOLID, H2020 iSAGE and the FACCE ERA NET project SustainFARM. Laurence coordinated the development of the Defra funded Public Goods tool (PG tool) which has been applied on over 1000 farms within a range of projects to assess diverse aspects of sustainability and he established and led the Environment, Sustainability and Health (ESH) research group at the Organic Research Centre.

,Dr Lisa Norton

Lisa Norton is a senior scientist in the Land Use Group at CEH where she has worked as a plant/landscape ecologist for over 20 years. Her research focuses on monitoring and management of natural capital for ecosystem service (ES) delivery and she works closely with social and economic scientists and stakeholders in interdisciplinary approaches towards sustainable environmental management of farmland. She led the Countryside Survey programme for 10 years and continues to lead work with Defra on the use of CS data for 25 YEP indicators under a Memorandum of Agreement between Defra and CEH. She is currently working on a range of other projects including SARIC Sheep on Arable and assessing options for ELM’s as well as working with an Innovative Farmers Group investigating how to maintain diverse swards on permanent grassland in Cumbria.

Lisa was PI on a recently completed Global Food Security funded project; Sustainable economic and ecological grazing systems – Learning from innovative practitioners, which aimed to evidence the practices of Pasture Fed Livestock Association farmers. The research seeks to influence both changes in management by the wider population of livestock farmers and in policies influencing livestock management approaches.
