Only one day left to episode seven!

In light of Earth’s day on 22nd April 2022, Researcher Live is hosting a month-long series of events where experts and book authors specialising in Climate Change, Conservation, Sustainability and Ecology will present their work.  Sign up here to receive email updates about this series.  The event page can be found here.

In this series, we will hear about:

  • The ecological future of our planet

  • The communication and scepticism of green ideas

  • Advances and directions in energy and sustainability

  • Animal habitats and human impact

Join us on the 25th April at 10am BST / 9am GMT for the seventh episode in our series, with Dr Nathalie Pettorelli, Institute of Zoology, Zoological Society of London, who will tell us about modern technologies and interdisciplinary approaches used in monitoring and protecting biodiversity.

The current biodiversity crisis, combined with climate breakdown, is leading the planet’s life-support systems to approach a danger zone for humanity. Our ability to monitor the state of biodiversity and the impacts of global environmental change on this natural capital is fundamental to designing effective adaptation and mitigation strategies for preventing further loss of biological diversity. Satellite remote sensing can provide key data in this context, offering repeatable, standardized and verifiable information on long-term trends in biodiversity indicators. Satellite remote sensing permits one to address questions on scales inaccessible to ground-based methods alone, facilitating the development of an integrated approach to natural resource management, where biodiversity, pressures to biodiversity and consequences of management decisions can all be monitored.

Nathalie will provide an interdisciplinary perspective on the prospects of satellite remote sensing for ecological and conservation applications, highlighting new research and technological developments that have a high potential to make a difference in environmental management.

Speakers Avatar Dr Nathalie Pettorelli, Institute of Zoology

Dr Nathalie Pettorelli heads the Environmental Monitoring and Conservation Modelling (EMCM) team, which is interested in developing tools and methodologies supporting the sustainable management of natural resources. Her own research is about assessing and predicting the impacts of global environmental change on biodiversity and ecosystem services, with a particular focus on climate change; the aim is to conduct high quality, innovative and internationally recognized research through a multi-disciplinary approach involving statistics, remote sensing and programming. Extensive experience with remote sensing data and its usefulness in ecology and conservation drives her interest in promoting a better integration of satellite-based data in global monitoring programs.
