Substituent Effect of the Bridging Ligand in the Trinuclear Ru Complexes on Photocatalytic Oxygenation of a Sulfide and Alkenes

Trinuclear ruthenium catalysts with different substituents on the bridging bpm ligand were synthesized and characterized. The differences in the photophysical and electrochemical properties were compared as well as reactivity toward oxygenation of sulfide and alkenes. Introduction of the bromo substituents greatly improved the catalytic activity. Changes in the frontier orbital energies and charges of the metal centers were examined to clarify the substituent effect.
