This second episode will feature Dr Garry Laverty, Senior Lecturer at Queen’s University in Belfast. 
 
Episode summary:
 

This talk will focus on our research into peptide hydrogels and nanotubes as future drug delivery and biomaterial platforms. This includes:

 

  • The development of a novel long-acting injectable peptide hydrogel implant for the delivery of HIV/AIDS and contraceptive drugs;

 

  • The use of peptide hydrogels as anti-infective coatings for medical devices and in wound healing;

 

  • Study of peptide nanotubes as drug delivery platform to cross biological barriers and as anti-biofilm agents against infection.

Dr Garry Laverty PhD is an Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the School of Pharmacy Queen’s University Belfast. His research focuses on using peptide nanomaterials, primarily self-assembled hydrogels and nanotubes, for drug delivery and biomaterial applications with support as Principal Investigator from several sources including the EPSRC (EP/S031561/1), MRC (MC_PC_18060), Wellcome Trust (07618/Z/17/Z), Innovate UK (32-08/520268133), Invest NI ( 2111/130282815) and Royal Society (RG150171, IE1609880). He has authored 45 publications relating to peptides and their use within the drug delivery and biomaterial fields. Dr Laverty was previously a Visiting Researcher at Bing Xu’s lab (Brandeis University, Department of Chemistry, Waltham, MA, USA), a world-leading group researching the use of peptide nanomaterials in biomedicine.
