This SEM image from Verónica Riechert and colleagues shows an etched surface obtained by a cryoultramicrotome cut of a random propylene-terpolymer nanocomposite with 8 wt % of organophilic montmorillonite. The copolymer functionalized with maleic anhydride was used as compatibilizer to reach exfoliation. The presence of exfoliated clay leads to strain hardening and softening, depending on the clay concentration and the magnitude of the Hencky strain. The clay disaggregation is also affected by the degree of functionalization of the compatibilizer, determining the oxygen permeability of the nanocomposites. (DOI: 10.1002/app.45840)
