A multitechnique complementary development is presented for the first time in order to understand the physical-chemical mechanism of lignin pyrolysis. Lignin biochars analysis by laser desorption ionization combined with very high-resolution mass spectrometry is reported. An overall physical and chemical mechanism for the thermal conversion of alkali lignin is proposed.
