What are we going to talk about in this episode?

With increasing prevalence rates of mental health problems in young people, we have been searching for more innovative approaches that extend traditional intervention and prevention programmes, in order to tackle the growing mental health crisis in children and young people. Mental health apps have received increasing attention in recent years, with estimates suggesting that anywhere from 10,000 to 22,750 mental health apps exist. Many of these apps are easily accessible to the individual and play an increasing role in community, school and clinical settings. While there have been promising findings that support the usefulness and potential efficacy of mental health apps, researchers have also identified common barriers and limitations in terms of how many of these apps are designed, developed and evaluated.

In this talk, Dr Moltrecht will discuss the existing digital mental health landscape with a specific focus on designing and evaluating mental health apps for children. Dr Moltrecht will give insights into common limitations and challenges and shares how these can be addressed using examples from her own work and existing research.

Speakers Avatar Dr Bettina Moltrecht, UCL

Dr Bettina Moltrecht did her MSc in Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. After that she worked as a clinical psychologist across various in-and outpatient services in Germany. In 2017, she moved to London to do her PhD in Evidence-based Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the Evidence-based Practice Unit, a cross-collaboration between the University College London and the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families.

During her PhD, which was funded by the EU Horizon2020 Research and Innovation programme, Dr Moltrecht designed, developed and tested a new emotion regulation app for children. She co-designed the different features together with children and worked closely with schools, teachers and parents throughout the project.

Currently, Dr Moltrecht is a research fellow at the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (UCL) where she researches mental health trajectories over the life course using existing data from the centre’s national cohort studies and electronic health records. She also holds a senior research fellow position at the Anna Freud National Centre where she investigates different emotion regulation interventions and measures, as well as digital interventions for families affected by parental mental illness.
