Influence of the Ligand Field on the Slow Relaxation of Magnetization of Unsymmetrical Monomeric Lanthanide Complexes: Synthesis and Theoretical Studies

In this Article, we have isolated a family of monomeric lanthanide complexes with Schiff base ligands with the molecular formulas [Ce(HL)3(NO3)3] (1) and [Ln(HL)2(NO3)3], where LnIII = Tb (2), Ho (3), Er (4), and Lu (5). Detailed direct- and alternating-current magnetic data were measured for all of the paramagnetic samples. Among all of the complexes, 4 shows zero-field SIM behavior compared to the others. This has been rationalized with detailed computational studies and a proposed plausible mechanism of relaxation.
