After a hole is created in a core orbital, outer orbitals relax within femtoseconds from ionization. Density-matrix equations can model this process as illustrated by Hikaru Kitamura in article e25442. The cover image shows color chart of the density matrix for a sodium atom after the removal of a K-shell electron.
