The monoclinic structure of Yb4Ga24Pt9 (space group C2/m) consists of pseudotrigonal slabs arranged in the sequence ABABB. An intermediate valence for ytterbium species of ∼2.5 was established from hard X-ray photoelectron spectra, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction.
