A general, photochemical method for the deoxygenation of aqueous solutions and organic solvents is described using visible light excitation of transition metal chromophores in the presence of oxygen scrubbing substrates. The method produces results comparable to traditional inert gas purging and freeze−pump−thaw techniques with [O2] < 50 μM and enhances the long-term stability of prepared samples over the duration of days to months.
