The conversion of meso-tetraarylporphyrin to its corresponding 2,3-dimethoxychlorin and the subsequent expansion of the pyrroline moiety to a morpholine moiety renders the macrocycle increasingly more conformationally flexible, as shown by a comparison of the solid-state conformations of the macrocycles as their free bases and metal complexes (M = Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Pd2+, Ag2+). The conformation is also reflected in their differing UV−vis spectra.
