Synthesis and Properties of Triarylhalostibonium Cations

The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of halostibonium cations as triflate and hexafluoroantimonate salts are reported. While the triflate derivatives form covalent and unreactive compounds, the hexafluoroantimonate salts are best described as ionic solids. Reactivity studies show that [ClSbPh3][SbCl6] is a better catalyst than [ClSbMes3][SbCl6] in the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran and the Friedel−Crafts dimerization of 1,1-diphenlyethylene. These results indicate that the reactivity of such species is controlled by the coordinating nature of the counteranions and the steric and electron-withdrawing properties of the aryl substituents.
