The substitution of light main-group elements by sulfur in 2-(2′-pyridine)imidazole-type π-chromophore ligands shifts the emission bathochromically by more than 100 nm from green/yellow to, for CuI complexes, rare intense long-lived near-IR emission with λmax ranging from 593 to 812 nm, quantum yields of up to Φ = 0.11, and lifetimes τ of several microseconds in the solid state as well as in PMMA films.
