Los programas formales internacionales para médicos (international medical programmes, IMP) representa una evolución alejada del voluntariado médico tradicional, y se basan en el intercambio bidireccional de conocimiento, experiencia y capacidad organizativa. La intención es desarrollar colaboraciones multidireccionales con capacidad local que sean resilientes frente a la escasez de recursos. El entrenamiento y la acreditación de cirujanos continúa siendo un desafío para los IMP, incluida la necesidad de reconocimiento mutuo de competencias y la certificación profesional.
