Two novel U(IV) compounds, (HPy)2UCl6 (1) and U(H2O)4Cl4·(HPy·Cl)2 (2), have been isolated from acidic, aqueous solutions. While the structure of 1 is built from well-established UCl62− anionic units, that of 2 contains a neutral U(H2O)4Cl4 complex that is notably absent from previous descriptions of U(IV) aqueous speciation. The synthesis, structure, and optical and magnetic characterization of the phases, as well as a computational investigation into the energetic favorability of UCl62− relative to U(H2O)4Cl4, are reported.
