Fusing six-membered phosphorus heterocycles with different (hetero)aromatic rings provides materials with an outstanding potential for multifunctional applications. Our investigations reveal the key parameters to obtain polycyclic architectures based on six-membered phosphorus heterocycles with, among others, electron-accepting properties, fluorescence quantum yields up to 0.8, and versatile means to control the 3D molecular arrangement through phosphorus post-functionalization.
