Metasurfaces: Millivolt Modulation of Plasmonic Metasurface Optical Response via Ionic Conductance (Adv. Mater. 31/2017)

Silver nanoparticle nucleation and growth occurring due to ionic transport is the underlying basis for a new millivolt-scale modulation mechanism of optical response in the plasmonic metasurface, reported in article number 1701044 by Harry A. Atwater and co-workers. This image is an artistic representation of silver migration across alumina and indium tin oxide (ITO) towards the surface, like bubbles of air rising upwards in water.
