A Laser-Plasma Positron Accelerator using Particle-Shower Plasma-Wave interactions.
An all-optical laser-plasma positron accelerator is introduced and modeled using the interaction of laser-driven particle-showers with laser-driven electron plasma-waves. The principle uncovered here shows the trapping and acceleration of positrons that are part of a laser-driven electromagnetic positron-electron shower in a laser-driven plasma wave. The proof of this principle using Particle-In-Cell simulations shows the production of hundreds of MeV beams with pico-Coulomb scale charge using existing lasers. By eliminating the dependence on kilometer-scale radio-frequency accelerators, this centimeter-scale accelerator makes high-energy positron beams widely accessible.
