Chemical doping studies, where Nb5+ substitutes Mo6+ in Ba3Mo1−xNb1+xO8.5−x/2, demonstrate that distortion of the d-metal polyhedra and the presence of (Mo/Nb)O4 tetrahedra with nonbridging apical oxygen atoms are important for the observation of significant ionic conduction in the Ba3MoNbO8.5 system.
