In situ triple N-alkylation of NEt3 by multidentate alcohol was assisted by FeSO4·7H2O,under solvothermal conditions, producing a trinuclear iron cluster. Real-time electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was used to detect key intermediates and to guide their isolation, which confirmed the domino nature of the reaction. A mechanism is proposed for the reaction.
