# Detailed analysis of vibrational nonequilibrium of molecular oxygen in shock-heated flow

The effectiveness of a widely used phenomenological approach for modeling vibrational excitation is evaluated by comparison with a higher fidelity approach based on an $a\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}b$ $i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}n\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}t\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}o$ computational chemistry analysis. A parameter is formulated to predict when the phenomenological approach is inaccurate.
