We devised a convenient method for the preparation of ferric heme-nitrosyl, {FeNO}6, complexes, based on the bulk oxidation of corresponding ferrous {FeNO}7 precursors, and we have demonstrated this approach for tetraphenylporphyrin complexes. The obtained {FeNO}6 complexes show high solution stability in the absence of NO gas and were characterized using structural and spectroscopic methods. We prepared and crystallized the chloro complex [Fe(TPP)(NO)(Cl)], which represents a key intermediate in the autoreduction reaction of ferric hemes.
