Mononuclear Mn(II) 2 mediates the two-electron reduction of O2 to generate a side-on Mn(IV)−peroxo 3 in which the metal-bound peroxo is further oxidized by 2 to form a mono-oxo-bridged dimeric Mn(III) 4.
