The kinetics of [RhCl6]3− base hydrolysis was investigated using UV−visible spectroscopy. Formation of [RhCl5(OH)]3− was found to be the rate-determining stage in the way of fast and complete transformation of [RhCl6]3− into [Rh(OH)6]3−. DFT calculations reveal that hydroxo ligands labilize the rhodium coordination sphere and govern the “trans” stereochemical route of the reaction, in contrast to hydrolysis of [RhCl6]3− in acidic solutions, where water ligand is known to provide the “cis” route.
