Uniform sized poly-lactic acid (PLA) particles were fabricated by Ilsoon Lee and colleagues at different mixing velocities (10-50 m/s) using a nano-mixer through either the emulsion diffusion or nanoprecipitation methods. With a nano-mixer (Couette-Taylor mixing geometry modified with cavitations) in the emulsion diffusion method, particles became smaller as the mixing velocity increased as long as the temperature was kept below the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PLA. On the other hand, it was quite surprising for us to find that the application of higher mixing velocity led to the formation of particles of larger mean diameter in the nanoprecipitation method.
