Replacement of the aromatic moiety of TAML catalysts with an aliphatic unit makes the HOMO of the “beheaded” TAML evenly distributed via in-plane nitrogens, changes the transition state for proton delivery from late to early, and increases 1 × 104-fold its resistance to the acid-induced demetalation.
