The N-heterocyclic carbene-phosphinidenide ligand {(IPr)P} is an excellent 2σ,2π-donor illustrated by the synthesis of group 8 and 9 half-sandwich metal complexes of the type [LMCl{P(IPr)}]. They exhibit remarkably short covalent metal-phosphorus bonds resulting from a strong polarization within the (IPr)P ligand framework. In contrast, the related imidazolin-2-iminato ligands may act as 2σ,4π-donors. The difference can be explained by a strong s-character of the lone pair on the P atom of the {(IPr)P} ligand.
