A new series of cationic iridium(III) complexes with nonconjugated benzylpyridinato as a cyclometalating ligand has been prepared. The methylene spacer in the CN ligand provides conformational flexibility, leading to the formation of two conformers. NMR studies and detailed density functional theory (DFT) studies show how the fluxional behavior is influenced by the choice of the ancillary ligand.
