Stable ZnI-Containing MOFs with Large [Zn70] Nanocages from Assembly of ZnII ions and Aromatic [ZnI8] Clusters

Two air and moisture-stable ZnI-containing metal–organic frameworks {[ZnI8ZnII3(H2O)x(HL)12](OH)2⋅13 H2O}n (x=6, 1; x=2, 2) (HL=tetrazole monoanion) with high-nuclearity Zn cages were first prepared by combining ZnII ions and multicenter-bonded [ZnI8] clusters with cubic aromaticity. The resulting frameworks were analyzed experimentally and theoretically. Interestingly, 1 can behave as a potential luminescent probe to detect toxic CrVI ions in water.
