Tetrametallic Thorium Compounds with Th4E4 (E = S, Se) Cubane Cores

Thorium compounds (py)8Th4E4(EPh)4(EC6F5)4 (E = S,Se) with cubane cores are isolated from ligand-based redox reactions of thorium chalcogenolates with elemental E. In each structure, there is no disorder among the chalcogenolate ligands, EC6F5 is always terminally bound, and the EPh ligands bridge two Th(IV) ions. Solution 77Se NMR spectra indicate the solid-state structure is maintained in pyridine.
