Highly Enantioselective [3+2] Annulation of Indoles with Quinones to Structurally Diverse Benzofuroindolines

Lijia Wang, Qiong-Jie Liu, Sunewang R. Wang, Xiang-Yang Song, Jun Zhu, Yong Tang
A facile and efficient method to the optically pure benzofuroindolines, especially those without 3-substituents that are susceptible to rearomatization, via [3+2] annulation of indoles with quinones is described. The suitable combination of a SaBOX-Cu(II) hydrate complex and freshly activated molecular sieves functions as the controllably dynamic release of water, which guarantees the success of this reaction. This reaction can be well performed on gram scale, even with only 0.5 mol% catalyst loading.
