Abstract

A coating system adherent to aluminum alloy (AA2024) substrates based on hydroxyapatite nano-platelets dispersed in a silica sol–gel matrix is presented. Using EIS and EN, the coating demonstrates excellent corrosion protective performance with high corrosion resistance during 50 days of immersion in artificial sea water while a neat silica sol–gel coating fails after 14 days. This performance of HA/sol–gel coating (HEX) is not only correlated to reductions in the rate of electrolyte permeation through the coating but also, it offered an active buffering effect to the local acidity of Al/electrolyte interaction.
