Luminophoric pyridinium-derived NHC ligands: The electronic and photophysical properties of iridium complexes could be tuned via a simple modification of pyridinium-derived NHC ligands. Iridium pyridinium-derived NHC complexes are highly emissive with an absolute quantum yield of 81% in fluid. More importantly, they have versatile applications; e.g., they can be used as both photooxidants and photoreductants and could have potential applications in pH sensing.
