Structural, Spectroscopic, and Theoretical Investigation of a T-Shaped [Fe3(μ3-O)] Cluster

We have prepared and structurally characterized a triferric complex comprising a T-shaped [Fe33-O)]7+ core. Our spectroscopic investigation revealed a S = 5/2 ground state which originates from the dominant antiferromagetic coupling of two iron(III) sites. A theoretical analysis of the magnetic hyperfine structure revealed the mixing of two excited states into the ground state which, in turn, is induced by a minor structural distortion.
