Four star-shaped triaminotriptycene molecules are self-sorted into a sodalite-like cage with a large host cavity of ∼8.5 Å in diameter to capture a bigger-sized heptadecameric water cluster guest in the hydrated triaminotriptycene solid, [(tatp)4·17H2O]n (1) (tatp = 2,6,12- triaminotriptycene), that exhibits an interesting light response behavior with the crystal color converting from pale yellow to brown under the xenon lamp or sunlight irradiation.
