New complexes containing iridium triazolylidenes for the highly efficient and versatile transfer hydrogenation of C═O, C═N, and C═C bonds and for alcohol dehydrogenation are reported. A set of mechanistic studies has identified distinct rate-determining steps for transfer hydrogenation and for acceptorless alcohol oxidation. These results underline the relevance of ligand design principles, and they provide guidelines for further optimization and for the design of new efficient systems.
