Low-Energy Spin Exciton as a Precursor to Magnetic Quantum Fluctuations in SmB6.
We report positive muon Knight shift measurements of the purported topological Kondo insulator SmB6. Below 20-25 K where formation of the Kondo-hybridization gap is complete, we observe a temperature-dependent anisotropic contact hyperfine field with enhanced magnetic dipolar broadening. Below 5-6 K we observe a sharp reduction in the contact hyperfine field and a field-dependent plateau in the width of the internal magnetic field distribution. These observations are consistent with a freezing out of bulk low-energy spin exciton excitations, and the emergence of magnetic quantum fluctuations concurrent with the development of a robust metallic surface state.

Keeping up-to-date with research can feel impossible, with papers being published faster than you'll ever be able to read them. That's where Researcher comes in: we're simplifying discovery and making important discussions happen. With over 19,000 sources, including peer-reviewed journals, preprints, blogs, universities, podcasts and Live events across 10 research areas, you'll never miss what's important to you. It's like social media, but better. Oh, and we should mention - it's free.
Researcher displays publicly available abstracts and doesn’t host any full article content. If the content is open access, we will direct clicks from the abstracts to the publisher website and display the PDF copy on our platform.
