Two new heteroleptic Cu(I) photosensitizers undergo reductive quenching upon visible light excitation in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor. Subsequent intermolecular electron transfer to the Rh(III) water reduction catalysts and H2 evolution is strongly affected by the π-accepting diimine ligand within the Cu(I) architecture, illustrating the importance of appropriate structural design considerations.
