Initial metal-based reduction and ligand-based protonation allow the metal center to act as an electron reservoir for ligand-centered hydrogen evolution. Effectively, noninnocent ligands can work in conjunction with a redox-active metal to promote reactivity. In this context, the metal serves as the auxiliary redox site, which facilitates two-electron chemistry at the ligand.
