Clarifying the Equilibrium Speciation of Periodate Ions in Aqueous Medium

Clarifying the Equilibrium Speciation of Periodate Ions in Aqueous Medium
Attila K. Horváth, László Valkai, Gábor Peintler
Speciation of periodate ion in aqueous solution is presented by using combined experimental techniques to show that periodate decisively exists in its octohedral form. Successive deprotonation of orthoperiodic acid and the low solubility of Na3H2IO6 is able to explain all the experimental findings. Neither the generally accepted rapid ortho−meta interconversion between IO4 and H4IO6 nor the frequently referred dimer form of periodate ion can play a significant role in interpreting even the previous experiments.
