Picomolar Traces of Americium(III) Introduce Drastic Changes in the Structural Chemistry of Terbium(III): A Break in the “Gadolinium Break”

Americium acts as a “pied piper” and lures the heavy lanthanide terbium across the “gadolinium break” into forming a structure that is normally preferred by the light lanthanides only. Terbium azobis(tetrazolide) usually crystallizes as a salt-like compound. Traces of americium in the mother liquor change the structural behavior of the compound by introducing a coordinative bond between the cation and the azobis(tetrazolide) anion, as shown by G. Steinhauser et al. in their Communication (DOI: 10.1002/anie.201703971).
