Controlling Chlorophyll a (Chla): Nature relies on chlorophylls to capture and transfer energy from sunlight during photosynthesis. To remove effects of the molecular environment the spectroscopic properties of Chla complexes were examined in vacuo. Remarkably, alkali-metal ion tagging of Chla turns on its fluorescence whereas protonation turns it off. Different alkali metal ion tagged complexes have surprisingly different absorption, but similar emission spectra. More information can be found in the Full Paper by R. A. Jockusch, et al. on page 7728.
