Gerd Becker, professor emeritus at the University of Stuttgart, passed away on January 10, 2017. Becker was a pioneer in the field of phosphorus chemistry and his work on phosphorus compounds containing double and triple bonds to carbon atoms transgressed the classic bonding concepts for the main-group elements and led to applications in transition-metal chemistry as well as organic synthesis.
