Effect of Continuous Paravertebral Dexmedetomidine Administration on Intraoperative Anesthetic Drug Requirement and Post-thoracotomy Pain Syndrome After Thoracotomy: A Randomized Controlled Trial

(Abstracted from J Cardiothorac Vasc Anesth, 31:159–165, 2017) The purpose of this prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of the administration of dexmedetomidine paravertebrally as an adjuvant to local anesthetic in limiting the intraoperative anesthetic drug requirement and the occurrence of postthoracotomy pain syndrome. Postthoracotomy pain increases the risk of delayed recovery due to atelectasis, hypoxemia, ventilation/perfusion mismatch, and infection.
