The cleavage of Hg−C bonds of RHgX aided by [S2]-donor ligands is critically dependent on the nature of the X group and the spacer between the two imidazole rings of [S2]-donor ligands. For instance, the rate of cleavage of the Hg−C bond of MeHgI by BmeMe is ∼100-fold faster than the rate observed for [MeHg]BF4. In addition, the rate of cleavage of the Hg−C bond of MeHgI by BmeMe is 2-fold higher than the rate obtained by BmmMe.
